After I had decided that I was going to travel alone to Thailand, I prepared myself and went there to venture and discover myself. There were many things I experienced in the 66 days I’ve spent in Asian area and I confess I did not expect to exceed so many limits. It was undoubtedly a process of constant learning that I will naturally apply in my life.
Since I have so much to express, I will use this post just to give you a summary of this trip and what I will share in the coming weeks.
I will not describe my trip as a tipical vacation, but as a learning process. It’s hard to describe in a nutshell all the places I’ve been, all the people I’ve met, all the experiences I’ve lived, everything I’ve learned. However it is inevitable not to speak of all this.

A ida para a Tailândia (The trip to Bangkok)

Everybody asks me if I was afraid to go alone. I confess that the most difficult thing was the decision-making. After I bought the plane ticket everything became easier. Sometimes I even think it was too easy, because everything went so well.
It took me over a month to plan this trip and it helped me not only to be confident but to avoid less desirable situations. I met several people who had setbacks and even health problems because they didn’t search information about the country where they were going. However, I did not plan everything in detail. After all, I left Lisbon with only the first nights scheduled in Bangkok. Everything else I booked on the way.
Still, I tried to figure out what I was going to need for the trip (documents, vaccines, insurance, what to take, etc.), what other travelers used to do, what I wanted to see, and how I could do it. And it was with this knowledge, and after reading so much about other people’s travels, that I went to a country that I didn’t know more positive and confident that everything was going to go well.

I also took the advantage of this trip to Bangkok to visit a friend in Geneva. It was a very good bonus and I really enjoyed spending a day with her and her family. As she had work to do, I still had the opportunity to stroll one morning through the streets of Geneva. It was the first time I had been alone in a foreign city and I felt very well. It was a beautiful day and with so much sun that I caught a scald (nothing serious but enough to turn red). I climbed the tower of the Cathédrale de Saint Pierre in the historic center and strolled along the Rhone River which is the most transparent and clean river I have ever seen.
Then I took the plane to Thailand that stopped in Doha, Qatar, for a total of about 14 hours of travel. Also for this I was prepared. I had planned to sleep as often as I could, because I was going to arrive in the morning in Bangkok, but if I couldn’t do it, I had music, food and books on my phone to keep me company during the flight. And then I arrived at my destination full of enthusiasm!

Bangkok was my first contact with Thai culture and Thai people. It was here that I visited the first temples and where I saw the first monks. I tried the Thai food for the first time and I started to appreciate the Thai people who are always happy and ready to smile. The adaptation was not difficult because people, besides being very friendly, are always ready to help. It was also my first night in a hostel, where I slept in a female dormitory with 12 beds.
I learned to move in the city (on foot, by taxi, skytrain, subway or boat) and I learn to cross a super busy road. I visited the Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market and saw a puppet show. In addition to all this, I realized how important was the previous king of Thailand who passed away in October 2016. It was declared national mourning for a year and there are posters and photos of the king in all establishments and basically everywhere. The respect and affection with which they speak of the king is remarkable.
It goes without saying that I made some visits with local guides who welcomed me like I was a friend and they showed me Bangkok always with a smile.

I stayed in a guesthouse where I was very welcomed and they provide me a boat trip in the evening to see the fireflies and a bicycle tour on the surroundings with the owners’ aunt. The owner of the guesthouse also took me to know the madness of the train market (Mae Klong Market). It was also my first typical breakfast: noodle soup – pretty spicy to start the day well.

Chiang Mai was one of my favorite places. In addition to the hundreds of temples, the weekend markets that fill the streets and the gastronomy that I fell in love with (and I’m not talking about the insects I tasted), it was here that I was more in touch with the monks and with the Buddhist culture and where I experienced meditation. I also did a great hike with the elephants under a big rainfall – an amazing experience.
And it was here that I met more travelers that, like me, were traveling alone. With them I lived and shared moments that I will keep forever in my memory. It was also where I learned to be in a place without haste and to appreciate the small moments of the day when we can just stop.

Pai is a small village within 3 hours of curves from Chiang Mai. It was where I ate more street food, where I met many travelers and where I felt like experiencing driving a scooter. I didn’t do it because I found it dangerous (it’s where I saw more people skinned from falls), but I’m thinking about it. I loved the surrounding nature and I would stay there longer. It is a place that inspires calm and was where I experienced my first Thai massage.

I have been to Chiang Rai for just one day. After having seen the temples and having put my feet in Laos for 20 minutes, I was prepared to go for a week to Siem Reap. It was here that I realized that Thailand, and especially Chiang Mai where I spent more than a week, had integrated itself into my comfort zone. I was feeling again that I was going to enter the unknown and, despite having this awareness, I was not afraid but rather discomfortable.

When I arrived I realized that I had not deceived myself: I was totally out of my comfort zone. I found the center of Siem Reap very touristy, but every time I left it, I was faced with simple lives. I loved Angkor Wat and its temples and visit a floating village. I confess that although I was there 7 days, I only started to feel comfortable the last two days, because the heat and the rain never let me explore the city at my will. Unlike most places in Thailand, I do not know if I would go back to Siem Reap, but I would have liked to explore other parts of Cambodia.

I liked Northern Thailand so much that I was very worried I wouldn’t like the islands to the south. Good thing I was wrong, but I confess that my experience in Phuket was not the best. Aside from the rain, most of the excursions were not available due to the low season and I once again felt the lack of knowledge to ride a scooter. I still managed to visit the famous island of James Bond, but I confess that if I had to return to Phuket I would only do it by scooter.

Apart from all the wonderful places I visited, once again it was the people who surprised me. In Krabi province I was told that about 80% of the population is Muslim, and again I found myself with a smiley and friendly people. I met many travelers from Malaysia and Singapore who were vacationing there, Muslims who kept me company and shared with me good moments that will remain in my memory.

This island on the east coast of Thailand was visited from a totally different perspective. It was here that I met a couple of Portuguese who already knew my mother and are living in Ko Pha Ngan for about 3 years. I discovered that on this island there is a small Portuguese community and it was here that I broke my diet of Thai food, because the Portuguese who live there are already fed up with “thai food”. I hung around on a scooter for the first time and I had the luxury of going 2 nights to a bungalow with a pool.
It felt very nice to speak Portuguese again and to hang out with Portuguese people. I was very well received and they took me to know the places that they like on the island.

It was on this small island that I discovered the wonderful undersea. I have no words to describe everything I have seen and felt. Corals and fish of all colors and sizes, which I only remember seeing in the National Geographic documentaries. I lost the fear that I still had of snorkeling and did scuba diving with a bottle of oxygen. It was the most intense experience I had on the whole trip and it showed me that we are the ones that create the limits. And you know something? There are no limits. We can do whatever we want. I just regret  not taking photos under water, but I’m keeping incredible memories.

Since I had already visited the main attractions of Bangkok, I decided that I could stroll and enjoy the last few days in this country. I went to many markets and malls, drank a Baileys in a bar on the 63rd floor with a spectacular view, went to the movies (first time alone to see a movie), I visited an art museum, went to a milonga (Argentine tango ball) where I danced with several people who welcomed me as if I were part of the group and returned to my favorite places.

A volta para Portugal (The return to Portugal)

I can say that I didn’t miss Portugal while I was there and I do not miss Thailand either now that I’m here. I would stay there for a few more months of goodwill but I returned enthusiastic about everything I learned and I feel that I am living my life in a different way. I’ll talk about this in another post, but I can tell you that I feel more calm, confident and willing to take better advantage of all the opportunities that come up.

O que aprendi (What I have learned)

As well as having really learned to be alone with myself, I was able to overcome limits that I didn’t expect to overcome. In the coming weeks I will share my most relevant learning and experiences. These are the topics I will address:how I overcame my fear of diving;
  • how I discovered that I’m the one that imposes limits to myself;
  • what I learned on a day of meditation;
  • what I learned about Thai culture;
  • how I learned to appreciate the small moments of life;
  • how I met people and what I learned from them;
  • what I learned from sharing my experience.

E tu?

And you? What do you think of all this experience? Is there a theme you would like me to develop? Please share your best experiences and challenges so that we can together inspire more people to do the same.
